There is a popular pyramid puzzle that uses only 2 exact same-shape wooden pieces.  The objective is to put the 2 pieces together to form a pyramid.  This seems very simple since it involves only 2 pieces.  It becomes a real challenge when someone not in the know tries to put them together.  When the solution is made known, everyone will appreciate that it is indeed an elegant solution.

A magic effect can be like a puzzle where the audience tries to figure out the solution, but will fail to find it.  Murphy’s Magic has taken this elegant pyramid puzzle and made it into a magic trick, where only the performer is able to put the pieces together to form a pyramid and the spectators cannot, despite being shown how to do it.

One of the 2 pieces is now cut into halves – 2 pieces of the same shape and size.  The performer challenges the audience to put these 3 pieces together to form a pyramid.  When they give up, the performer shows them the solution.

The 3 pieces are given to the audience, but they can never put them together to form a pyramid.
