As the name suggests, this is an effect where a spectator chooses one of the 5 ESP symbols, and the performer knows which one will be chosen in advance.
There are 2 methods of achieving this outcome. One is to use a magician’s force to make the spectator choose the symbol that is predicted in advance. The other method is to use an “out” for each of the symbols chosen.
Wayne Dobson has always been fascinated by “out” effects. He came out with a convincing “out” for each of the 5 ESP symbols chosen by a spectator.
Here is the effect. The performer takes out from his wallet a set of 5 ESP symbol cards, a chip with a “?” on it, and a card with the word ESP printed on it.
The wallet is made to stand like a tent. The performer shows the card with the word ESP, and explains the meaning of ESP. They are 5 symbols which are used to test a person’s extra sensory perception. He then rests this card on the wallet, which is used as a stand. He himself will carry out this test on the spectator.
The performer lays out the 5 ESP symbol cards in a row on the table. He asks the spectator to choose any one of the 5 symbols, and place the ? chip on her chosen symbol.
Once the spectator has done that, the performer indicates that he knew in advance that the spectator would choose this particular symbol, and goes ahead to prove that.
The good thing about an “out” effect is that the spectator has a completely free choice of the item to choose. The disadvantage of an “out” trick is that some of the “outs” are not convincing. They may involve bringing out or introducing some other items.
In ESP, Wayne has come out with 5 convincing “outs”, one for each of the 5 symbols chosen. Everything is in sight, and it seems the performer knows in advance which symbol the spectator is going to choose.
You receive all the items, and an explanation DVD.
There are no special moves which you need to execute. The choice of one of the 5 ESP cards is indeed a free choice. And everything can be kept and carried in the small wallet.
