MIDAS TOUCH

“Midas Touch” is a “pull out a real object from a flyer or drawing” trick.  It is similar to Henry Evans’ “3D Advertising”.

The product comes in 3 variations.

The first effect consists of a colourful 8.5 inches X 5.5 inches sales promotion flyer showing a deck of playing cards, a packet of fruit gums and a packet of Kitkat.  The performer then proceeds to “pull” the real stuff out of one of 3 items in the flyer.  The pull-out object can be handed to a spectator.  When the object is pulled out of the flyer, a blank space is seen on the flyer where the illustration of the object was.

The second effect is a black and white sketch of the object, eg the packet of Kitkats.  Once again, the performer pulls the object out of the drawing and it turns into a real packet of Kitkat.

Also supplied is a blank sheet of paper where you can make your own black and white sketch of any object that you wish to make materialised.

You receive 3 versions of the colourful flyer: one with a blank space for the fruit gums, one for the Kitkat chocolate, and one flyer with all the 3 objects depicted on it.

You also receive a paper with a black and white sketch of the packet of Kitkat, and a blank piece of paper for you to customise your production of any object.  The sheets of paper supplied are made of special water-resistant paper and are laminated, so that you can write on them with a whiteboard marker and clean the writing off afterwards.  It also ensures that whatever is written on it does not bleed over to the other side of the paper.

You are also given colourful as well as black and white pictures of the objects that you can pull from the paper.  Included in the package are the paper templates and the necessary items for you to make the gimmicks for each effect.

You get a link to a 20 minutes video tutorial conducted by Zach Ng.  He speaks in the Mandarin language but there are English subtitles.  He teaches you how to construct the gimmicks for each of the effects.  You are not supplied with all the gimmicks ready-made because it would make the product more costly.  You are given a limited supply of the necessary items to construct the gimmicks.  They can be easily recycled and used to construct other gimmicks.

Zach teaches an interesting effect using the blank piece of paper.  You write a prediction concerning a playing card and includes a sketch of the back of a bicycle playing card.  A spectator selects a card which is then lost back into the deck of cards.  The performer shows the prediction and proceeds to pull the playing card sketch out of the paper where it materialises into a real playing card.  When it is turned over, it matches exactly the identity of the spectator’s chosen card.

Pulling a real object out of its illustration on a piece of paper is very visual and easy to do.  However you need a little misdirection and audience management when you wish to hand out the pulled object to the spectators.  (Rated 4.5/5 stars)
