SINGAPORE RING 115 – Jun 2023 Magic Meeting Report

Our June meeting took place on the evening of 15th June 2023 at the Drama Centre where 42 members and guests attended. The theme for the month was “Money Magic”, and promptly at 8.00pm our hosts and coordinators, David Fillary and Tommy Kian gave us an overview of the program. With the rules of engagement expressed, he introduced Nique Tan, and Wee Kien Meng a.k.a. “Mr. Bottle”, with about six guests who were his students.

Jeremy Pei, who had published his “Ultimate CSB” on DVD, performed a prediction with three coins, proceeding to Coins Across, Matrix, and ending with Dean Dill’s “Explosion”.

Ian Tan performed his version of a “Triad” coin routine, where he produced a coin, multiplied them to three, and all vanished in a very clean ending.

With his family “heirloom”, James Pang presented his story about black holes and wormholes and performed a coin act with Nested Boxes as a climax. He then underwent his Wand Presentation Ceremony, where he was inducted as our newest member. Vice-President Enrico Varella presented him with a wooden wand and a set of our Ring’s constitution after James took the oath of secrecy. Our new members have six months to take a qualifying test before being accepted.

Our first guest performer presented her version of the reliable “Spectator Cuts to Four Aces”, then competently preceded to a coin & wand routine, followed with a “Coin & Pen-cap” routine. The next one performed “Out of This World”, and a David Blaine-inspired card transposition with two spectators. Our third guest with chess as his theme, produced a Cups & Balls routine, that ended with actual pawn pieces as his final loads.

Nique Tan, our former member and now busy professional mentalist, performed Gary Kurtz’s “I Dream of Misty” and the three-coin matrix called “Trio in Three”.

David Fillary then conducted a master class in coin handling. He performed and taught his routine, including a detailed teach-in of the Heel Clip. Members seemed to enjoy this session as they used their coins to practice along with our lecturer/host David.

After a mild break, Carson Goh conducted a “Fireside Chat” with school-teacher Shade Soo, which included a Q&A with this cardsharp, as well as his performance with cards. Soo described magic as “finding the right narration and connection on choices in our life”.

Jeremy Pei returned with a dealer’s demonstration of coin gaffs, and a presentation of “Copenetro”.

After the much-awaited “Lucky Draw” which saw three members win magic-themed prizes, the meeting ended at about 10.00 pm with members jamming for another hour.
